Sonbhadra – Fossils, Rock Art and River Landscapes
Accommodation in Sonbhadra
Fossils of ancient life, cave paintings and rivers define Sonbhadra’s distinctive character. The district’s destinations cater to different travel interests: Salkhan is known for traces of early life, the Kaimur Hills for rock art, and the Belan and Son rivers for their landscapes. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth first considering which of these experiences interest you most.
Ancient traces at Salkhan
Salkhan Fossils Park, officially called Sonbhadra Fossils Park, is located near the village of Salkhan on state highway SH5A. It covers around 25 hectares in the Kaimur Hills. The fossils found there are algae and stromatolite fossils, estimated to be almost 1,400 million years old. This makes a very early period in Earth’s history the focus here—a very different emphasis from the district’s later cave paintings. If you are interested in natural history, you can make the fossil park a dedicated focus of your stay in Sonbhadra.
River landscapes and rock art
At Mukhafall, the Belan River plunges from a height of around 100 feet. The site is on the riverbank in Ghorawal tehsil, about 40 kilometres west of the district headquarters. Numerous rock paintings add to Mukhafall’s distinctive landscape. The waterfall and rock art give the place two different facets: here, the river landscape meets evidence of human creativity.
The reservoir of the Rihand Dam is also part of the area’s water landscape. The dam is in Pipri in Sonbhadra district, in the state of Uttar Pradesh; the reservoir lies on the border between Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. When choosing your holiday rental, your preferred focus can help guide you: Would you mainly like to experience river landscapes, are you interested in archaeological sites, or would you like to explore religious and cultural destinations?
Cave art and historical sites
The Lakhania Caves are in the Kaimur Hills of Sonbhadra. The district is known for several cave-painting sites in the Vindhya region; the historical paintings in the Lakhania Caves are around 4,000 years old. In Churk, Panch Mukhi Mahadev is located on a hill, three kilometres from the district headquarters. The site includes sixteen historical caves with paintings and carvings that attract tourists and pilgrims. If you are interested in rock art, you will find a variety of sites and historical evidence here, each with its own geographical setting.
In Shivdwar, there is a three-foot-high black stone image of Shiva and Parvati. Shivratri is the most important festival there and draws a large crowd. Kund Vasini Dham is on the western bank of the Son River, 35 kilometres west-southwest of the district headquarters. The temple is built in the Khajuraho style and was constructed entirely without cement. A large sun temple stands at the entrance to Renukeshwar Mahadev Mandir. These sites offer different points of interest: the image and festival in Shivdwar, the temple architecture by the Son, and the sun temple at the entrance to the mandir.
Nature watching and festivals
The headquarters of Kaimoor Wildlife Sanctuary is in Churk. Watering spots and observation towers at elevated viewpoints allow tourists to watch birds and animals in their natural habitat. This is a distinct nature-focused experience alongside the fossils and cave art. An Urs festival is held in Vijaygarh every April, attended by people from different religions and faith communities. Jwalamukhi Shaktipeeth also holds a large festival every Navaratri, attracting a very large crowd. If you are planning your stay around such occasions, consider the relevant festival when making your travel plans.
Getting there and finding your bearings
Sonbhadra is connected by road to Lucknow, Allahabad, Varanasi and Mirzapur and is accessible via SH5A. Robertsganj railway station is on the Chunar branch line of the Delhi–Howrah railway line. These location details can help you keep your interests in mind when searching for a holiday rental: Salkhan is home to the fossil park, Churk to Panch Mukhi Mahadev and the headquarters of Kaimoor Wildlife Sanctuary, while Mukhafall and Kund Vasini Dham are located by the Belan and Son rivers, respectively.
