Lithuania is a country for journey that is little explored but it offers much to its visitors.You will sooner find an apartment or a cottage rather close to the Baltic coast than in cities in the centre of Lithuania. It is more likely to find a room in a hotel there.The difference between a hotel and a hostel in Lithuania is not very large. The typical Lithuanian hotels offer single and double rooms. You can also stay for a night in a large bedroom as well.
When in Lithuania, take a city tour. In the capital of the country, Vilnius, you can find many different attractions. There you will find many testimonies of Jewish settlements. Vilnius is also called the “Jerusalem of the East.” Besides the possibility to visit synagogue you will also be able to make a visit to the Jewish museum and walk through the former ghetto. There is a memorial to victims of German occupation only in a few kilometers away from Vilnius.
You can experience the actual Judaism in many concerts in Yiddish language. Except for the Jews, there are many Poles in Vilnius, too. Even a visit to the cathedral in Vilnius will remind you of the Polish past of the city. Other cities that are worth visiting are the port city of Klaipeda that also has many traces of German history, and the industrial city of Kaunas. Shopping in all the Lithuanian cities can be a rather pleasant pastime, especially if you are going to buy jewelry made of amber that is very cheap there. Nature lovers also feel good in Lithuania, especially on the Curonian Spit. You can not only bathe there but also walk along the dunes that are numerous there.
